Amid fresh escalation of violence in Manipur over the past few days, former Indian Army Chief (retired) Ved Prakash Malik on Friday called for “urgent attention” to the law and order situation in the state.
In a tweet, General Malik tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Home Minister Amit Shah, writing, “The law and order situation in Manipur needs urgent attention at the highest level.”

Malik was responding to a tweet by General (retired) Nishikanta Singh, a retired senior army officer from Manipur, who claimed that “the state is now stateless”.
A day after Union Minister Ranjan Singh’s home was torched by a mob, Nishikanta Singh tweeted that the country was now “stateless”, and compared the situation in Manipur to that of Libya, Lebanon, Nigeria and Syria. “Manipur seems to have been left to its own juice. Is anyone listening?” asked the former Lieutenant-General.
Malik described this as “an unusually sad call from a retired general from Manipur”.
Thursday night attack It was the second attack on Ranjan Singh’s residence located in Kongpa in Imphal East district since the outbreak of violence in Manipur. The first incident occurred on the night of 25 May when a mob attempted to break into the house while he was inside.
Meanwhile, the evening saw new clashes between the government’s Rapid Action Force and a mob who set fire to a warehouse belonging to a retired Iraqi Air Force Intelligence officer from the tribal community. The police used tear gas to disperse the rioters for fear of targeting other properties.
Nine people were killed in shootings and arson incidents in Iggang village of Kangbokbe district on Tuesday night – the second major wave of violence in the state after initial large-scale clashes from May 3-5.
Violence first broke out in Manipur after a “tribal solidarity march” was organized in the hill areas on 3 May to protest the Meitei community’s claim to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The country has seen sporadic violence since then.
