A case was registered under Section 420 (Fraud) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Information Technology Act at Panvel Police Station on Saturday.

A case has been registered against a couple for allegedly cheating a Navi Mumbai woman out of 9.7 lakh rupees by promising her a part-time job, police said on Sunday.

An official said a case under Section 420 (Fraud) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Information Technology Act was registered with Panvel Police Station on Saturday.

According to the complaint, the couple contacted the 42-year-old housewife on the phone and offered her a part-time job through the Telegram app, he said.

He said the complainant was asked to rate hotels online and promised to pay for it.

Once the task was completed by June 14, the official said, the accused asked the victim to deposit some money in her bank account for her payment and she deposited Rs 9.7 lakh.

He added that the couple then gave evasive responses and failed to return her phone calls, after which the victim filed a complaint, adding that further investigations are ongoing.
