Minister of Electricity, Prohibition and Excise of Tamil Nadu has been arrested by ED under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in money for jobs scam when he was Transport Minister in the former AIADMK government led by Late J Jayalalithaa

The Supreme Court, on June 21, agreed to hear a petition by the Enforcement Directorate against a Madras High Court order allowing the transfer of the arrested Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji, who is undergoing medical treatment at a city government hospital, to a private facility.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta brought the matter before the Vacation Tribunal to Judge Surya Kant and Judge M Sondrich in an effort to conduct an expedited hearing.

Mehta told the court that Balaji was an influential minister and that the Supreme Court had allowed his transfer to a private hospital.

The Supreme Council on June 15 allowed the transfer of the minister, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate and has since been undergoing medical treatment in a government hospital in the city, to a private facility.

The Supreme Court, which was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Balaji’s wife, issued the temporary injunction.

It also issued a Notice to the Emergency Department on the main petition of Balaji’s “unlawful” arrest and published the order on 22 June.

The Supreme Court said Balaji would remain in judicial detention and allowed the investigation agency to have its own team of doctors to question the minister.
