Elon Musk recently explained why he decided to rename Twitter to X and noted that it was more than just a name change. Instead, it represents his plans to create an “everything app”.

Musk explained in a letter mail Monday night.

“The Twitter name made sense when it was just 140 personal messages flitting back and forth — like a bird tweeting — but now you can post almost anything, including several hours of video. In the coming months, we’ll add end-to-end communications and the ability to manage your entire financial world. The Twitter name just doesn’t make sense in this context, so we have to give the bird a call.”

It’s a move business analysts consider risky, scrapping years of brands behind blue Twitter. Already, Twitter has struggled to retain advertisers as Musk’s changes to the site have led some to fear it’s not a safe place for brands to market.

Musk recently hired former NBCUniversal advertising director Linda Iaccarino as CEO, seen as a move to help reassure advertisers. In a letter to employees Monday, Yaccarino said of the name change, “Our utilization is at an all-time high and we’ll continue to delight our entire community with new experiences in voice, video, messaging, payments, and banking — creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunity.”

Disclosure: NBCUniversal is the parent company of CNBC.
