A video clip has gone viral showing the woman, who has been identified as Surekha Lahu Bhagadi, being carried in the ‘Jaholi’.

A pregnant tribal woman was taken to a primary health center on a makeshift stretcher on Tuesday because her village in Palghar district of Maharashtra state does not have a nearby road. The stretcher bearers had to wade through deep waters as they had to cross a river before reaching the Primary Health Care Center in Nandgaon, five kilometers from the small village of Shendi Pada in Kurdol village.

A video clip has gone viral showing the woman, who has been identified as Surekha Lahu Bhagade, being carried in a “Jolly” rickshaw. Bhawshab Chattar, a health officer in Taluka, who visited the Primary Health Care Center in the afternoon, said that Bhagadi, who is seven months pregnant, is undergoing treatment and her condition is stable.

The woman complained of labor pains early Tuesday morning. Since no ambulance could reach the village, Mohan Mudak, the deputy of Sarpanch in Korlud, said her family members and local residents assembled a stretcher using blankets and bamboo sticks, and carried it to the PHC on foot.
