The Supreme Court had suspended the ASI survey until 5pm on Wednesday, allowing time for the mosque’s management to challenge the lower court’s order.

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday began hearing a petition against a local court order directing the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct a survey to determine whether the Gyanvabi Mosque in Varanasi was built on a temple.

The petition is being heard in the Prakash Badia Court.

On Monday, the Supreme Court suspended the ASI survey until 5 p.m. Wednesday, giving time for the mosque’s administration to appeal against the lower court’s order.

The Varanasi District Court on Friday had ordered ASI to conduct a survey using techniques such as ground penetrating radar and drilling, if necessary.

The Supreme Court order to temporarily halt the survey came while the ASI team was inside the compound.
