Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has criticized Rio Ferdinand for praising Manchester City’s Champions League victory.

Ferdinand was working as an analyst for BT Sport at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium. City secured European glory with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan on Saturday (11 June) courtesy of Rodri’s 68th-minute goal.

The Red Devils icon has been seen paying tribute to several players including Jack Grealish and Robin Dias. He also claimed before the final that Pep Guardiola didn’t need the Champions League trophy to be considered the best coach in history (via Eurosport):

“He (Guardiola) is the best football coach I’ve ever seen.”

Williams found an issue with Ferdinand’s assessment of the Citizens squad amid their rivalry with Manchester United. The England defender took to Instagram to send a message to the former Red Devil:

“(Ferdinand) I bet you don’t congratulate if you are a player, keep the same manners. The face is also dull.”

Not only did Manchester City win the European title, but the continental treble as well. It is the second English team to achieve this, after the success of Manchester United 1998-99.

Ferdinand played under Sir Alex Ferguson during his famous 12 years at Old Trafford. United fans argue that the Scotsman is a better coach than Guardiola, so the pundits’ comments are interesting. The former Red Devils defender has had a fierce rivalry with City throughout his footballing career.

The Red Devils have fallen behind their neighbors since Ferguson retired in 2013. They haven’t won the Premier League or Champions League while City have won six league titles and are now Europe’s elite competition.

Manchester United sealed their place in the Champions League next season by finishing third in the English Premier League.

It was a remarkable debut season for Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, which ended his six-year wait for a trophy. His team won the Carabao Cup in February with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Ten Hag said the Red Devils belong in the European competition (via The Guardian):

“This club belongs in the Champions League. It’s not easy in the Premier League with so many competing for it. It’s huge when you get it done. We’re still not where we want to be, but we’re back in the Champions League and I think that was a step up.” Really important.”

Ten Hag’s side are hoping to do better in Europe after a poor quarter-final exit from the Europa League this season. They last played in Europe’s elite competition in the 2021-22 season, exiting in the last 16 against Atletico Madrid.
