The campaign’s first ad shows Snoop Dogg as the human form of a Doberman Pinscher, a reference to the rapper’s 1993 song “Who Am I? (What’s My Name)?” From his debut album, “Doggystyle.”

In 2022, American pet owners will spend about $136.8 billion on their furry friends, up 13.2% from the previous year, according to Survey of the American Pet Products Association.

“We understand that pet parents want to get the most for their dollars and seek compelling deals for quality products wherever they can,” Petco Chief Marketing Officer Katie Numan said in a press release.

Petco CEO Ron Coughlin said last year that Americans continue to spend money on pets, even during periods of financial stress.

The cost of pet services, including veterinary care, rose 10.6% year-over-year in May, according to US Department of Labor. The department said pet food costs rose 13.8% over the same period.

Shares of Petco are down about 9 percent year-to-date, a latecomer chewywhose shares are up about 6% so far this year.

Petco has relaunched the vital care Membership program in March 2022 as part of a drive to be more competitive in the pet care market. The company said in an email that the program provides additional savings and benefits to consumers.
