In a unique non-stop operation, the Indian Air Force flew all night on May 3 from the Indian airport in Uttar Pradesh and rescued 192 Indian nationals stranded in the war-torn African country.

The Air Force flew a C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft and followed the Hendan-Jeddah-Sudan route and landed in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The rescue operation lasted nearly twenty-four hours without interruption.

The plane rescued some of the last remaining Indian citizens in the war-torn country. These were mostly women, children and elderly people, whether they were NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India).

These people were not allowed to land in Jeddah and were therefore flown directly to India on a non-stop flight on a heavy plane.

While on the ground in Sudan, the aircraft’s engines were started in preparation for a hasty exit from the airport.

The crew faced a medical emergency when a passenger lost consciousness during the flight. The occupant was stabilized by oxygen being administered by the crew.

The aircraft landed in Ahmedabad late in the evening of 4 May, and returned to its home base in Hendan the same day.
