In a statement, the organization claimed that all Métis homes in the community settlement area of Churachandpur had been burned by “well-armed civilians backed by armed men”.

People’s Alliance for Peace and Progress Manipur, an organization working for the Meiteis, on Monday claimed that 5,000 people belonging to the community have been rendered homeless in the violence-hit Churachandpur district of the state.

Communal violence erupted in the northeastern state on May 3 when members of the Meitei community and the Koki tribe clashed with each other over the Meiteis’ claim to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, leaving at least 54 people dead.

In a statement, the organization claimed that all Metis homes in the community settlement area of Churachandpur had been burned by “well-armed civilians backed by armed men”.

“The Meiteis are taking refuge at the DC office in Churachandpur district headquarters which has very loose security. None of the refugees have been evacuated yet.”

The organization also alleged that in the town of Moreh, almost every house of the Meitei was burnt down and some of the Meiteis took refuge in Myanmar and the rest in the Assam Rifles camp in Khudengthabi.

The clashes erupted after the Kokes organized a demonstration in 10 hill districts of the state to protest the Métis demand.

So far, officials said, 23,000 people have been rescued from areas hit by violence and taken to military garrisons and relief camps.
